The sovereign is a gold coin of the United Kingdom, with a nominal value of one pound sterling.
Struck from 1817 until the present time, it was originally a circulating coin accepted in Britain and elsewhere in the world; it is now a bullion coin and is sometimes mounted in jewellery. In most recent years, it has borne the well-known design of Saint George and the Dragon on the reverset; he initials (B P) of the designer, Benedetto Pistrucci, are visible to the right of the date.
This UK gold coin is commonly referred to as the 'Five Pound Coin'; however, it is occasionally called the 'Quintuple Sovereign'
The coin contains 1.17713 ounces of gold - the same gold content as five full sovereigns.
Struck in 22 carat gold the coin weighs 39.94g Only 25,000 circulated.
